Broome

Broome is often reduced to the famous Cable Beach sunsets, but there's plenty to see and do if you're up for it. Careful planning is integral here, as it is for the other North West regions of the Pilbara and Kimberley. The wet season from November to April closes a lot of attractions, flooding 4WD tracks and gorges. The dry season is the busiest time, so book accommodations and tours in advance.

Although we don't endorse the diminishment of Broome, we can acknowledge that Cable Beach is a fantastic slice of natural beauty deserving of the praise it receives. The sky at dusk is dramatic on this 22-kilometre stretch of white sand, especially when it's cloudy. You may view it from a beachside bar or restaurant, a 4WD at a viewing spot along the beach, or on camelback. The southern tip of Cable Beach is Gantheaume Point, where 130 million-year-old dinosaur footprints can be seen at low tide. The contrast between red cliffs and blue ocean makes this location one of the most photographed in Broome.

A few hours from Broome is the Dampier Peninsula, where several small Indigenous communities have welcomed tourists. Venturing this way is a guaranteed way to get off the beaten track, extending your Broome trip with some outdoor adventure. Many Indigenous communities run guided tours in which they share traditional hunting and fishing techniques, cultural experiences, and their relationship to the land. Self-guided activities include mud crabbing, kayaking and snorkelling, and camping under the stars. Booking is essential in this region, and local guidelines must be respected.

Broome's Chinatown is a visitor hub, a pearling port turned shopping and café district. Visit a pearl showroom, an art gallery, a shop or a boutique for souvenirs, catch an outdoor movie at Sun Pictures, or explore the historic Pearl Lugger's grounds. Just south of the town, you'll find Roebuck Bay, home to mangroves, heaps of different bird species, and the iconic Staircase to The Moon phenomena. Just make sure to time your visit so you can actually see it! You could even soak up the scenery at Matso's Brewery, whose brews quench people's thirst all over WA.
