Breweries of all size find their way in Perth, as we can all acknowledge that we’re beer lovers at heart. Even the CBD is jam-packed with micro- and nano- breweries, ranging from wildly successful to those just getting started. The scene has absolutely exploded in popularity, with some companies topping year-end lists nationally in general categories, and others delving into hyper-niche brews that mean there’s something for everyone to not only enjoy, but venture out into trying.
The CBD itself is home to some stellar spots if you’d like to guide your own tour. We’d start at Bright Tank Brewing Co. in East Perth, and then train in to the Generous Squire on Murray Street with a smash burger and James Squire brew. Northbridge Brewing Co. is about a ten-minute walk away, where we’d head to the rooftop for skyline views. Training again to City West puts Phat Brew Club at your doorstep, where you can pair one of their twenty beers (including a strawberry bubblegum sour) with their Asian-inspired menu.
A tour of this kind goes just as well in West Leederville or Fremantle. Start at Little Creatures in the Fishing Boat Harbour, but be sure to make your way to to Gage Roads, with their iconic brewhouse overlooking the Freo Port. Freo Social houses an Otherside Brewing Co. Brew Shed (although their brewhouse isn’t too far, in Myaree), and Running With Thieves is worth the trip down to South Beach for their atmosphere, cool merch and, of course, the beer.
Breweries thrive in the South West region of WA, although that’s stretching our definition of Perth a bit. The Swan Valley, being only 25 minutes from the CBD, brings the vibes of the South West to an accessible distance, especially when looking for that regional, picturesque brewery experience. Henley Brook is a hub of venues, with Funk Brewshed, Bailey Brewing Co. and Valley Social found here, along with highly-awarded Old Young’s Distillery. To the South of Old Young’s is Duckstein Brewery, a personal favourite of mine. A staple on many a wine tour, this German-inspired brewery kills it on all fronts, including live music and their menu featuring currywurst, kransky and schnitzel. Their beer list is accompanied by amazing fruity wines, the Mango Katlenburger a new holy grail for those who like a sweet wine.
