The range of accommodation found in Perth and its surrounds is surprisingly to say the least. When trying to book accommodation, generally the same kinds of places come to mind like standard hotel rooms, or perhaps a converted house or apartment. These are available practically everywhere in the world, but for those looking for something they can’t get anywhere else, there are a few different ways to go about it.
The most iconic hotels in Perth are the Crown Hotels in Burswood, comprised of three different complexes to suit your tastes. The Crown Towers are arguably the most luxurious, rated five stars and home to the Crown Theatre, Perth’s premier venue for local and international acts, namely touring musicals. Within the resort is Crown Casino, affectionately referred to by locals as ‘the Cas,’ and several restaurants and bars. Internationally-famous Japanese restaurant Nobu resides at Crown Metropol, but I would skip it in favour of the Epicurean in Crown Towers. This buffet-style restaurant deals in both Western and Asian cuisine, with the fresh seafood and dessert bar standouts. Even if not staying at the hotel, a visit here is worth the price tag.
The CBD is full of classic hotel chains, so for something new and trendy, TRIBE is the place to be. These hotels are now found internationally, but they were founded in Perth in 2017. Their philosophy is guided by design, and removing the superfluous items and details hotels tend to overload; think mini-bars and throw pillows. They are focused on sustainability, with no single-use items and refillable amenities. A Kings Park view room would be my pick, and it’s surprisingly affordable.
A testament to Perth’s gorgeous landscape is the number of accommodation options that boast their views as their best feature. To escape the every day, I’d go for one of the many unique accommodation options found when venturing beyond the city centre. South of Perth in Mandurah, there are options to stay in villas on the canal, dockside or in an exclusive luxury resort, so close that you can dunk your feet in the water while you have your morning coffee. On the opposite end of Perth, you can stay on a winery in Chittering in a tiny cabin and take in the views of the rolling vineyards. Although definitely ‘tiny,’ these cabins have all you need for a weekend away, being based only 45 minutes from Perth. One of their options even includes an outdoor bath and wine fridge.
Farmstays are an awesome way to avoid a long drive but experience the best of a regional lifestyle, even for a short while. Obviously there are amazing farmstays throughout the entirety of the Great Southern, but Settlers Rest Farmstay is only 30 minutes from the CBD and more than does the job. This is a great spot for kids, or even just animal lovers, as the farm holds goats, sheep, lamb, cows, alpacas, horses, chickens and guinea pigs to be fed or pet. You can collect your own eggs for your breakfast, and even fish. Settlers Rest is an excellent base of operations for all your Swan Valley activities.
